The Outdoor Education Center is a joint venture between the Black Warrior Council, B.S.A. and the Tuscaloosa County School System to enable students to extend and enhance their learning in an outdoor setting. The overall goal is to provide a unique learning opportunity for students to engage in applied learning and to extend that learning through constructive use of resources beyond those available in the typical classroom.

Camp Horne is a 488-acre site located in Cottondale, AL (13633 Keenes Mill Rd, Cottondale 35453). The facility includes two lakes, dining hall, parade field, numerous outdoor shelters, nature trails, and has one of the most diverse flora and environmental areas within Alabama.

Programmatic Opportunities

As a developing program, most programs are to be teacher-led with the assistance of resource kits (see the full list and kit inventory on the resource list) provided through the Tuscaloosa County School System. All Resource Kits are located at the Outdoor Education Center. This approach is similar to that of the AMSTI program. As the Outdoor Education Center is utilized by teachers, they are encouraged to submit suggestions to enhance the instructional kits. The inventory of the current kits is based on work from a representative teacher committee.

Cost

Please note that there is a fee to help replenish what you use in the program kits and using camp. Cost is $3.00 per person.

As we progress, there will be programs at a second tier that will be staffed programs, aimed at a particular instructional focus and grade level, held periodically throughout the year, and promoted through school system emails. Teachers are encouraged to visit this website regularly for updates!
